Have you seen articles online saying sitting is the new smoking? Everyone is aware of the health risks of smoking such as cancer, heart attacks and stroke. Smoking can also cause emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and even low back pain. But did you know that sitting too much is also hazardous for your health? Research that came out in 2015 revealed that the average person spends 50% of their day being sedentary– either at work, home, or commuting between the two.
It was also discovered that the amount of time we sit during the day is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even death. But here’s the kicker – the increase in risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and death from sitting is there regardless of whether we’re exercising on a regular basis!
