Hustle and grind or flow and glide? drjenniferharrison.com A pic of a tired woman with her head down on her desk with an overlayed pic of a happy person jumping up in the air. When I first launched my online business almost 10 years ago, the general approach to being an entrepreneur was you had to hustle and grind 24/7.

Well, guess what? The hustle and grind approach isn’t sustainable and it’s a recipe for burnout! Flow, on the other hand changes everything.

While the hustle and grind mentality is still out there – especially among male entrepreneurs – there’s a wave of female (and a few male) leaders in the self-development and business world who are taking a different approach. Mainly because (like me) they came too close to burnout or actually did!

So, what’s this fresh approach? It’s what I call Flow & Glide. Let me explain.

When I talk about flow or being in flow it means being fully engaged in your task and in the present moment. No distractions. You can lose all sense of time.

Websters Dictionary defines it as “gliding along smoothly”.

Organizational psychologist, Dr. Benjamin Hardy, describes it as “the state of being fully immersed in what you’re doing…where you’re performing for the sake of the passion, rather than as a means to an end.”

In my opinion, with the traditional “hustle and grind” mentality, it’s definitely more focused on the “means to an end”. There can also be a lot of ego involved – wearing your endless hours of work and stress like a badge of honour.

Now, it doesn’t mean that you won’t be working hard to achieve your goals.

However, when you’re approaching your goals from a flow state, it doesn’t feel like hard work.

There’s more ease, good feelings, less stress and you can actually accomplish more in less time!

Think of a time when you were fully immersed in what you were doing. Maybe it was when you’re creating content for your website. Perhaps “getting lost” in a good book or blissing out to your favorite tunes. You weren’t thinking about your grocery list or your weekly to-do list. You were solely focused on what you were doing. It felt really good and rewarding. That’s flow!

So, the question is, how do you get into a flow state?

In this week’s blog I outline 5 steps you can take to get into the flow and out of the hustle and grind for good!

Step 1. Get rid of distractions! Turn your phone to silent, turn off notifications. Have someone look after the dog and kids.

Step 2. Get clear on your task. Write out what needs to be done right now – not next week or a month or a year from now.

Step 3. Clear your mind. Meditation is great for this. If your first thought is, “I can’t meditate!”, no worries! Most people don’t realize that there are many, many different types of meditation. Some only take a couple of minutes! The first chapter in my book, “Stressed Self to Best Self: A Body Mind Spirit Guide to Creating a Happier and Healthier You” is called “Meditation: Which Type is Right for You?” In it I outline, 9 different types! If you’re looking for a quick meditation you can do right now, click here:

Another great way to calm your nervous system and clear your mind is Emotional Freedom Techniques aka EFT Tapping. Click here to learn more:

Step 4. Use the Pomodoro Technique. This involves working on a single task for 25 minutes and then taking a 5-minute break. That’s called one Pomodoro. Once you’ve done four, take a 15-30 minute break.

Step 5. Repeat Steps 1 -4 as often as you can, especially with things you love to do!

With social media, everyday we keep training our brains to flit from one post to the next looking for the next dopamine (reward neurotransmitter) hit.

Training our brains to be in flow also causes the nervous system to release dopamine (but in a good way) and other “feel good” hormones. Not only that, but it also calms the main stress centre in our brain. That’s why being in a flow state feels so good!
